Explore Impressionist painting

…through the wonderful expressive styles of Australian artists …

Australian Impressionism captured the unique bush and city life using en plein air techniques. While inspired by French Impressionism, Australian Impressionists were focused on establishing a unique national identity in art leading up to the 1901 Federation, frequently highlighting "settler" viewpoints of the landscape.

Artists like Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Fredrick McCubbin, Charles Conder and Jane Sutherland used loose brushwork and bright palettes to depict pioneering subjects, light, and atmosphere. Capturing the different qualities of Australian sunlight, unlike the soft, gentle light of the Northern European landscape, these artists depicted the shimmering heat, dazzling glare and dusty haze so typical of an Australian summer.

Sometimes referred to as the Heidelberg School Australian Impressionism developed an informal, evocative and naturalistic style that evoked the colours and flora of the Australian landscape.

Impressionism was an International phenomenon during the 19th century with artist around the world stepping outside the studio to paint natural and urban scenes directly in their subject

This 7 week course offers something for everyone, including artists and teachers who are passionate about learning and keen to expand their understanding of this much loved and transformative art movement. We explore social and cultural contexts that shaped the development of Impressionism in the late nineteenth century making this an ideal starting point for those also looking to deepen their appreciation of art history.

You will be expertly guided through set-by-step instructions and demonstrations to produce exciting visual statements and take home a folio of activity sheets, and a ready-to-hang finished artwork.
